OBJECTIVE: There exists limited comprehensive evidence on the potential association between non-cardiac comorbidities and myocardial infarction (MI). Thus, we conducted an umbrella review of existing meta-analyses to provide a broad understanding of non-cardiac health outcomes associated with MI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The primary focus on the prevalence of related health outcomes in patients with MI was systemically searched. Each original meta-analysis that was included had its methodological quality evaluated by a Measurement Tool Assessment Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR2). To evaluate the certainty in the evidence for each outcome, we employed GRADE and the Joanna Briggs Institute Prevalence Critical Appraisal Tool. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023458642). RESULTS: We identified seven meta-analyses comprising 126 studies with 336,581 participants from 22 countries and five continents. The pooled prevalence of comorbidities in patients with MI was 39% anxiety [95% confidence interval (CI), 30-48; GRADE, very low certainty], 29% depression (95% CI, 23-36; very low certainty), 39% frailty (95% CI, 24-55; very low certainty), and 23% failure of returning to work (95% CI, 16-29; very low certainty). The diagnosis of MI was associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment (odds ratio, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.10-1.92; moderate certainty). Among frail patients, MI was associated with an increased risk of major bleeding (relative risk, 1.93; 95% CI, 1.08-3.45; low certainty) and mortality (relative risk, 2.29; 95% CI, 1.48-3.53; moderate certainty). However, we did not find any evidence of cancer risk associated with the development of MI. CONCLUSIONS: Our umbrella meta-analysis provided comprehensive evidence of the association between MI and several non-cardiac health conditions. The robustness of our study is attributed to the integration of evidence across several studies, thus, these insights offer valuable treatment options for policymakers and physicians to develop personalized health strategies.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between assisted reproductive techniques (ART) and the risk of asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) is controversial. Thus, we aimed to investigate the relationship between ART and the risk of asthma and AR in a nationwide, large-scale birth cohort. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study utilized the National Health Insurance Service data in South Korea to conduct a nationwide, large-scale, population-based birth cohort. We included all infants born between 2017 and 2018. AR, asthma, food allergies, and atopic dermatitis were defined using the International Classification of Diseases tenth edition codes. Asthma was classified as allergic or non-allergic based on accompanying allergic diseases (AR, food allergy, or atopic dermatitis). Using 1:10 propensity score matching, we compared infants conceived through ART with those conceived naturally (non-ART). After matching, logistic regression was used to compare the hazard ratio for asthma and AR between the two groups. RESULTS: We included 543,178 infants [male infants, 280,194 (51.38%)]. After matching, 8,925 and 74,229 infants were selected for the ART and non-ART groups, respectively. The ART group showed a decreased risk of asthma in the offspring [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR), 0.45; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.41-0.48]. Similarly, for AR, being conceived by ART was associated with a decreased risk of AR (aHR, 0.25; 95% CI, 0.12-0.37). ART offspring showed a decreased risk of asthma and AR in offspring compared to that observed in non-ART offspring. CONCLUSIONS: Our study offers important insights for clinicians, researchers, and parents regarding the health outcomes of ART-conceived infants and enhances our understanding of ART's impact on respiratory health.

OBJECTIVE: There is a scarcity of literature investigating the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on long-term trends in health-related quality of life (HrQoL) using large-scale and representative data. Thus, we aimed to investigate the nationwide and long-term trends in quality of life (QoL) using the European Quality of Life- 5 dimensions, 3-level version (EQ-5D-3L) from a Korean representative serial study of 2.8 million people, 2008-2021. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This Korean study used data on adults between 2008 and 2021 who participated in the Community Health Survey. Timeframes were categorized as COVID-19 mid-pandemic (2021) and pre-pandemic (2008-2019). The mean EQ-5D-3L index for the whole population and subgroups stratified by demographic characters was evaluated for each timeframe, and differences between before and during the COVID-19 pandemic were also analyzed. RESULTS: 2,827,240 adults who responded to the survey, 2008-2021, were eligible for this study. Overall EQ-5D index persistently decreased from 2008-2016, then minimally decreased during the pandemic, still being much higher than forecasted before the COVID-19 pandemic. The reduction in the rate of decline in QoL after the COVID-19 outbreak was especially marked in white-collared, young adults, people with 'good' or 'very good' subjective health, and college-educated or above group. On the other hand, the previously increasing trend of QoL in the elderly group has decelerated during the pandemic, and QoL of the 'very bad' subjective health group recorded the lowest in the whole study period. CONCLUSIONS: The present study investigated the long-term trend of QoL in Korean adults using serial data over the past 14 years, with a special emphasis on comparing the pre- and mid-COVID-19 pandemic periods.

Surface codes are the most promising candidates for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Single qudit errors are typically modeled as Pauli operators, to which general errors are converted via randomizing methods. In this Letter, we quantify remaining correlations after syndrome measurement for a qudit 2D surface code subject to non-Pauli errors via loops on the lattice, using percolation theory. Below the error correction threshold, remaining correlations are sparse and locally constrained. Syndromes for qudit surface codes are therefore efficiently samplable for non-Pauli errors, independent of the exact forms of the error and decoder.

OBJECTIVE: Among the global efforts toward preventing the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccines are a pivotal factor in ending the pandemic. Thus, through a large-scale population-based study, we investigated the individual-, social-, and family-associated factors affecting the acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines in South Korea. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data were obtained from a nationwide representative study (Korea Community Health) conducted in 2021. To determine the individual-, social-, and family-associated variables for COVID-19 vaccination acceptance, we investigated data from 225,319 individuals. RESULTS: In the total sample (n=225,319), 184,529 COVID-19-vaccinated people and 40,790 non-vaccinated people were evaluated. The factors related to the acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination were significantly associated with the demographic factors, namely, older age group, female sex, and a history of influenza vaccination, as well as medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and depression. Socioeconomic conditions influencing the acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination were significantly associated with low-income families and blue-collar workers. Health-related risk factors were high in the obese group. However, a noteworthy negative association was found between the acceptance of vaccination and smoking habits and alcohol consumption. Conversely, a positive association was observed between academic level and vaccination acceptance. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that old age, female sex, a history of influenza vaccination, medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and depression, low-income families, blue-collar workers, and health-related risk factors, such as obesity, were associated with the acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination. Additionally, a high academic level, absence of smoking habits, and non-current alcohol use were positively associated with vaccine acceptance.

OBJECTIVE: Although previous studies have explored the causes of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy during the pandemic, there is a lack of generality and reproducibility in these studies. Therefore, we aimed to comprehensively identify the determinants of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy through a representative nationwide cross-sectional study conducted in South Korea. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We used a nationwide, representative, and large-scale dataset from the 2021 Community Health Survey. By analyzing 193,495 participants, we investigated the nationwide incidence of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and the various causes thereof. RESULTS: The national prevalence of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy was 5.7% (95% CI, 5.5-5.8). COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy was associated with an increased incidence of the following factors: (1) demographic factors including early-middle adulthood [vs. late; odds ratio (OR), 1.51; 95% CI, 1.38-1.65] and male sex (vs. female sex; OR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.01-1.14); (2) physically healthy subjects; (3) lower socio-economic status (vs. high household income; OR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.19-1.38); (4) having mental illness (vs. normal mental status; OR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.13-1.38); and (5) unhealthy habits such as current smoking (vs. non-smoking; OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.13-1.31); and insufficient physical activity (vs. sufficient; OR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.01-1.17). Common reasons for vaccine hesitancy were concerns about side effects (41.34%), health problems (24.60%), and inability to select the type of vaccine (14.13%). CONCLUSIONS: This representative large-scale nationwide study conducted in South Korea investigated the nationwide prevalence and determinants of vaccine hesitancy. Our results provide useful public health information, especially on novel aspects of vaccination strategies, for policymakers to improve the acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines.

AIM: To report the prevalence of pericardial diverticulum of the right lateral superior aortic recess (RSAR) on computed tomography (CT), to analyse the structural CT findings of whether or not the structure is large enough to be seen on chest radiographs, and to describe changes in size and shape of RSAR on follow-up CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A well-circumscribed, fluid-attenuation lesion in the anterior mediastinum with the following CT features was defined as a pericardial diverticulum of the RSAR: no enhancing wall, communication with the RSAR, abutment to the heart with an acute angle, and moulding by adjacent structures. Chest CT images of 31 patients with the diverticulum were evaluated, including four selected from 1,130 consecutive patients (0.4%). RESULTS: The diverticulum projected ventrally from the RSAR and its largest size on axial CT ranged between 12-56 mm. Although the RSAR and the largest diverticular portion were usually seen on the same axial image (n=19), the latter sometimes lay above (n=1) or below (n=11) the former. On sagittal images, the last 11 diverticula resembled teardrops hanging from the RSAR by small stems. All of the 24 patients, each with 1-31 follow-up CT examinations, showed size fluctuations ranging between 1-46 mm (mean, 16 mm) during a follow-up period of 0.5-172 months (mean, 65 months). The diverticulum was not identifiable in five cases and was identifiable but did not show a connection with the RSAR in three cases when the diverticulum was smallest in size. CONCLUSIONS: In cases of cystic anterior mediastinal mass, a deliberate search for its connection with the RSAR on all available CT images including previous studies is necessary for the diagnosis of pericardial diverticulum of the RSAR.

OBJECTIVE: It is difficult to conclude that COVID-19 is associated with a decrease in the suicide attempts rate by comparing only a short-term period. Therefore, it is necessary to examine attempted suicide rates through a trend analysis over a longer period. This study aimed to investigate an estimated long-term trend regarding the prevalence of suicide-related behaviors among adolescents in South Korea from 2005 to 2020, including COVID-19. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We sourced data from a national representative survey (Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey) and analyzed one million Korean adolescents aged 13 to 18 years (n=1,057,885) from 2005 to 2020. The 16-year trends regarding the prevalence of sadness or despair and suicidal ideation and attempt and the trend changes before and during COVID-19. RESULTS: Data of 1,057,885 Korean adolescents was analyzed (weighted mean age, 15.03 years; males, 52.5%; females, 47.5%). Although the 16-year trend in the prevalence of sadness or despair and suicide ideation and attempt consistently decreased (prevalence of sadness or despair between 2005-2008, 38.0% with 95% confidence interval [CI], 37.7 to 38.4 vs. prevalence in 2020, 25.0% [24.5 to 25.6]; suicide ideation between 2005-2008, 21.9% [21.6 to 22.1] vs. prevalence in 2020, 10.7% [10.3 to 11.1]; and suicide attempt between 2005-2008, 5.0% [4.9 to 5.2] vs. prevalence in 2020, 1.9% [1.8 to 2.0]), the downward slope decreased during COVID-19 (ßdiff in sadness, 0.215 with 95% CI 0.206 to 0.224; ßdiff in suicidal ideation, 0.245 [0.234 to 0.256]; and ßdiff in suicide attempt, 0.219 [0.201 to 0.237]) compared with pre-pandemic period. CONCLUSIONS: This study found that the observed risk of suicide-related behaviors during the pandemic was higher than expected through long-term trend analysis of the prevalence of sadness/despair and suicidal ideation and attempts among South Korean adolescents. We need a profound epidemiologic study of the change in mental health due to the pandemic's impact and the establishment of prevention strategies for suicide ideation and attempt.

Introduction: Fusarioid fungi that cause damping-off and root diseases can result in significant losses to conifer crops produced in forest nurseries across the USA. These nurseries are vital to reforestation and forest restoration efforts. Understanding the diversity of Fusarioid fungi associated with damping-off and root diseases of conifer seedlings can provide an approach for targeted management techniques to limit seedling losses and pathogen spread to novel landscapes. Methods: This study identifies 26 Fusarium spp. (F. acuminatum, F. annulatum, F. avenaceum, F. brachygibbosum, F. clavus, F. commune, F. cugenangense, F. diversisporum, F. elaeagni, F. elaeidis, F. flocciferum, F. fredkrugeri, F. fujikuroi, F. grosmichelii, F. ipomoeae, F. lactis, F. languescens, F. luffae, F. odoratissimum, F. oxysporum, F. queenslandicum, F. redolens, F. torulosum, F. triseptatum, F. vanleeuwenii, & F. verticillioides), 15 potential species within Fusarium and Neocosmospora species complexes (two from F. fujikuroi species complex, nine from F. oxysporum species complex, three from F. tricinctum species complex, and one from Neocosmospora species complex), and four Neocosmospora spp. (N. falciforme, N. metavorans, N. pisi, & N. solani) and associated host information collected from conifer-producing nurseries across the contiguous USA. Results: Phylogenetic analyses identified Fusarioid fungi haplotypes that were associated with 1) host specificity, 2) localization to geographic regions, or 3) generalists found on multiple hosts across diverse geographic regions. Discussion: The haplotypes and novel species identified on conifer seedlings should be considered for further analysis to determine pathogenicity, pathogen spread, and assess management practices.

OBJECTIVE: To perform a systematic review of case reports or case series regarding thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) and cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) related to ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination to address the clinical features, laboratory findings, treatment modalities, and prognosis related with CVT. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We included 64 TTS patients from 19 articles, 6 case series and 13 case reports, in which thrombosis occurred after the first dose of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination published up to 30 June 2021 in Embase, ePubs, Medline/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. RESULTS: Of the 64 TTS patients, 38 (59.3%) had CVT. Patients with CVT were younger (median 36.5 vs. 52.5 years, p<0.001), had lower fibrinogen levels (130 vs. 245 mg/dL, p=0.008), had more frequent history of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and had higher mortality rate (48.6% vs. 19.2%, p=0.020) than that of patients without CVT. In multivariable analysis, the possibility of presence of CVT was higher in younger age groups [odd ratio (OR): 0.91, 95% confidence interval (CI): (0.86-0.97, p<0.001)] and those with accompanying intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) (OR: 13.60, 95% CI (1.28-144.12, p=0.045). CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that CVT related to ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination was associated with younger age, low levels of fibrinogen, presence of ICH and more frequent mortality compared to those of non-CVT. If TTS occurs after ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccination, the presence of CVT in patients with young age or ICH should be considered.

OBJECTIVE: Due to the various changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, some infectious diseases showed different epidemiology and prevalence during the pandemic. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies on trends in the prevalence of hepatitis B and C related to the pandemic. Thus, we compared the prevalence of hepatitis B and C before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive trend analysis with a nationwide serial cross-sectional survey from 2007 to 2021 (n=86,931) using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The changes in the prevalence of hepatitis B and C were evaluated using a weighted regression model to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS: From 2007 to 2021, 86,931 Korean adults aged 19 or older were included in the KNHANES data. The prevalence of hepatitis B showed a declining trend until the onset of the pandemic (1.80% in 2007-2009; 1.08% in 2016-2019; and 1.01% in 2020), at which point this trend reversed (1.39% in 2021). The prevalence of hepatitis C remained stable (0.14% in 2007-2009 and 0.18% in 2016-2019), with no particular surge related to the COVID-19 pandemic (ßdiff, -0.002; 95% CI, -0.761 to 0.756). For hepatitis B, old age was identified as a pandemic-related vulnerable factor (ratio of odds ratio, 1.68; 95% CI, 1.05-2.70). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, unlike other infectious diseases, hepatitis B and C did not show a decreasing trend during the pandemic. In particular, hepatitis B showed a rebound trend during the pandemic, which was noticeable in those aged 60 or older. Further studies are needed to support these findings.

Background: With the increasing use of cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA), stem subsidence has emerged as one of the primary complications. Although electron beam melting (EBM)-manufactured stems have been demonstrated to prevent subsidence, there has been limited investigation into the comparative biomechanical impact of collarless and collared EBM cementless stems on stem subsidence in veterinary medicine. Aims: This study aimed to compare the stem implant resistance and failure mechanical properties between collarless and collared EBM-manufactured stems. Methods: Seven pairs of femurs were harvested from canine cadavers. In each pair of femurs, the left femur was implanted with a collarless, and the right femur with a same-sized collared cementless stem. Specimen constructs were mounted to the loading frame of a testing machine and load was transferred to the femoral stem parallel to the longitudinal axis of the femur until the stem subsided 5 mm. Load and stem displacement data acquired during the tests were used to generate load-displacement curves and obtain stiffness, yield, and failure data for each specimen construct. Yield and failure energies were calculated as the areas under the load-displacement curves to the respective points. The effects of implant type and load during subsidence were analyzed using paired t-tests. Results: The yield and failure loads for the collared stems were approximately 40% greater than for the collarless stems (156.39 ± 43.63 kgf vs. 112.01 ± 59.83 kgf, P<0.05). Conclusion: This study supported the advantages of collared EBM stems, including subsidence prevention and better initial stability for early osteointegration.

The principle of microscopic reversibility lies at the core of fluctuation theorems, which have extended our understanding of the second law of thermodynamics to the statistical level. In the quantum regime, however, this elementary principle should be amended as the system energy cannot be sharply determined at a given quantum phase space point. In this Letter, we propose and experimentally test a quantum generalization of the microscopic reversibility when a quantum system interacts with a heat bath through energy-preserving unitary dynamics. Quantum effects can be identified by noting that the backward process is less likely to happen in the existence of quantum coherence between the system's energy eigenstates. The experimental demonstration has been realized by mixing coherent and thermal states in a beam splitter, followed by heterodyne detection in an optical setup. We verify that the quantum modification for the principle of microscopic reversibility is critical in the low-temperature limit, while the quantum-to-classical transition is observed as the temperature of the thermal field gets higher.

Quantum autoencoders serve as efficient means for quantum data compression. Here, we propose and demonstrate their use to reduce resource costs for quantum teleportation of subspaces in high-dimensional systems. We use a quantum autoencoder in a compress-teleport-decompress manner and report the first demonstration with qutrits using an integrated photonic platform for future scalability. The key strategy is to compress the dimensionality of input states by erasing redundant information and recover the initial states after chip-to-chip teleportation. Unsupervised machine learning is applied to train the on-chip autoencoder, enabling the compression and teleportation of any state from a high-dimensional subspace. Unknown states are decompressed at a high fidelity (~0.971), obtaining a total teleportation fidelity of ~0.894. Subspace encodings hold great potential as they support enhanced noise robustness and increased coherence. Laying the groundwork for machine learning techniques in quantum systems, our scheme opens previously unidentified paths toward high-dimensional quantum computing and networking.

OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aims to assess the susceptibility to and clinical outcomes of COVID-19 in autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic disease (AIRD) and following AIRD drug use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included observational and case-controlled studies assessing susceptibility and clinical outcomes of COVID-19 in patients with AIRD as well as the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 with or without use of steroids and conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (csDMARDs). RESULTS: Meta-analysis including three studies showed that patients with AIRD are not more susceptible to COVID-19 compared to patients without AIRD or the general population (OR: 1.11, 95% CI: 0.58 to 2.14). Incidence of severe outcomes of COVID-19 (OR: 1.34, 95% CI: 0.76 to 2.35) and COVID-19 related death (OR: 1.21, 95% CI: 0.68 to 2.16) also did not show significant difference. The clinical outcomes of COVID-19 among AIRD patients with and without csDMARD or steroid showed that both use of steroid (OR: 1.69, 95% CI: 0.96 to 2.98) or csDMARD (OR: 1.35, 95% CI: 0.63 to 3.08) had no effect on clinical outcomes of COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: AIRD does not increase susceptibility to COVID-19, not affecting the clinical outcome of COVID-19. Similarly, the use of steroids or csDMARDs for AIRD does not worsen the clinical outcome.

As random operations for quantum systems are intensively used in various quantum information tasks, a trustworthy measure of the randomness in quantum operations is highly demanded. The Haar measure of randomness is a useful tool with wide applications, such as boson sampling. Recently, a theoretical protocol was proposed to combine quantum control theory and driven stochastic quantum walks to generate Haar-uniform random operations. This opens up a promising route to converting classical randomness to quantum randomness. Here, we implement a two-dimensional stochastic quantum walk on the integrated photonic chip and demonstrate that the average of all distribution profiles converges to the even distribution when the evolution length increases, suggesting the 1-pad Haar-uniform randomness. We further show that our two-dimensional array outperforms the one-dimensional array of the same number of waveguide for the speed of convergence. Our Letter demonstrates a scalable and robust way to generate Haar-uniform randomness that can provide useful building blocks to boost future quantum information techniques.

The ability to manipulate and measure the time-frequency structure of quantum light is useful for information processing and metrology. Measuring this structure is also important when developing quantum light sources with high modal purity that can interfere with other independent sources. Here, we present and experimentally demonstrate a scheme based on intensity interferometry to measure the joint spectral mode of photon pairs produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We observe correlations in the spectral phase of the photons due to chirp in the pump. We show that our scheme can be combined with stimulated emission tomography to quickly measure their mode using bright classical light. Our scheme does not require phase stability, nonlinearities, or spectral shaping and thus is an experimentally simple way of measuring the modal structure of quantum light.

An important issue in developing quantum technology is that quantum states are so sensitive to noise. We propose a protocol that introduces reverse dynamics, in order to precisely control quantum systems against noise described by the Lindblad master equation. The reverse dynamics can be obtained by constructing the Petz recovery map in continuous time. By providing the exact form of the Hamiltonian and jump operators for the reverse dynamics, we explore the potential of utilizing the near-optimal recovery of the Petz map in controlling noisy quantum dynamics. While time-dependent dissipation engineering enables us to fully recover a single quantum trajectory, we also design a time-independent recovery protocol to protect encoded quantum information against decoherence. Our protocol can efficiently suppress only the noise part of dynamics thereby providing an effective unitary evolution of the quantum system.
